AI美芸展「S氏がもしAI作曲家に代作させていたとしたら」

S氏、N氏は実在する。S氏はN氏に「指示書」に基づく代作を依頼し、N氏は
ゴーストライターとして作曲を完遂していた。一方でS氏は自らが全聾であ
り、自身の内から一音符一音符を紡いだと称していた。生み出された「交響
曲第1番」は、ごく少人数からの嫌悪と、圧倒的多人数からの賞賛と感動と
涙に包まれていたが、ある時、N氏は自らがゴーストライターであったこと
を名乗り出て、問題となった。
さて、AI美芸研としてはこれを民事事件として扱わない。
「S氏がもし人間の作曲家にではなく、AIの作曲家に代作させていたとした
ら、何がどのように問題か、または問題はないのか」と問いかける。N氏の
才能はAIでは代替できないとの議論も可能だろうが、その一方で、S氏の
「指示書」自体の創作性や、AIという他者または技術を想定することにより
顕在化する、作品と人称性の問題にも斬り込めるはずだ。
たとえば画家ヨハネス・フェルメールは、カメラ・オブスクラという光学機
器を使用して絵を描いていたとされる。記録や証拠はないが今ではこれが通
説であり、それによって作品価値が落ちることも考えられない。しかし当時
は、作画の道具としてのそうした機器は恥ずべき「虎の巻」であり、その使
用は画家としての技量の無さの露呈として、ひた隠しにされていたのではな
いか。フェルメールだって、正確なデッサンから正攻法で絵を描き起こして
いるのだと周囲に詐称していたかもしれず、だとすれば、S氏の詐称との距
離はいかほどであろうか。
カメラ・オブスクラ自体に創作性があるとは、今では考えにくい。指示書か
ら楽譜を生成するN氏のようなAI作曲家が実現できたとして、その創作性は
どうなのか。むしろいきなり指示書を書くS氏のようなAI作曲家のほうが、
創作性がありやしないか。いやそれ以前に、S氏のようなAI作曲家なんて、
実現できるのか。

"What If AI Composed for Mr. S?"

Mr. S and Mr. N are real characters. Mr. S had asked Mr. N to
compose music based on his “instruction sheets,” and Mr. N had
long served as his ghostwriter. Meanwhile, Mr. S had proclaimed
that he is completely deaf so that he composes musical pieces note
by note from his innermost core. The resulting “Symphony No. 1”
attracted a far greater number of majority who admired the piece,
with some even moved to tears, than a very selective minority who
expressed strong hatred, but the success was later turned over into
a scandal as Mr. N revealed his engagement as the ghostwriter.
We AIAARG (Artificial Intelligence Art and Aesthetics Research
Group) do not see this case just in the framework of a lawsuit.
Rather, we see it as a testcase that poses questions like “What if
Mr. S employed AI, instead of a human specialist, to compose for
him? Then how would it matter? Or nothing matters?” Of course it
is possible to claim that the unique talent of Mr. N is
irreplaceable, but the case can remind us of different perspectives,
such as the creativity of Mr. S' “instruction sheet” itself, or
the contingent status of authorship made explicit by the
intervention of AI as the Other/technology.
For example, Johannes Vermeer is supposed to have produced his
painting with the help of an optical device called “camera
obscura.” Although no existing evidence or record can support this
theory firmly, it is generally believed and well accepted not as a
negative factor for his legacy. But in those days, the device might
be seen as a sort of embarrassing “cheat sheet,” which would
suggest the lack of true mastery as a painter, and Vermeer might be
desperate to keep it secret. It is also not impossible to imagine
the painter might state he produces his work based on his own
accurate sketch just as others, and if that is the case, it poses a
question about its difference from Mr. S' falsified authorship.
Today it is difficult to find creativity in camera obscura itself.
What about the autonomous creativity of an AI-composer, if realized,
who just like Mr. N can compose musical pieces based on given
instruction sheets? Rather, composers who would start from writing
instructions right away are arguably more creative. First of all,
it is very debatable whether an AI composer that can operate just as
Mr. S is ever possible.
