Artificial Intelligence Art and Aesthetics Exhibition (Nov. 3-Jan. 8, OIST)

Dear All,

Artificial Intelligence Art and Aesthetics Research Group (AIAARG) is pleased to organize the world's first exhibition that comprehensively features art and artificial intelligence across diverse formats, at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST). On display from November 3, 2017, to January 8, 2018, the exhibition "Artificial Intelligence Art and Aesthetics Exhibition" considers "Will AI have its own autonomous aesthetics?" as the main theme.

Based on rapid developments and latest insights in the field of artificial intelligence today, the exhibition covers not only so-called media art, but also the interactions of artificial intelligence and aesthetics that expose fundamentals of contemporary art, music, and poetry since the early twentieth century.

In addition to various exhibits across the university, the exhibition also organizes four music concerts, including one devoted to player-piano music, as well as interdisciplinary and international six symposium series, inviting us to scrutiny the present state of aesthetics as of 2017 and further explore where our values and human dignity are.

This exhibition would not have been possible without the support and understanding of our co-organizer OIST and our partners, including Goethe-Institut Tokyo, as a part of "A Better Version of 人", a common project by the Goethe-Institutes in East Asia, and last but not least, of many supporters of our activities. We AIAARG greatly appreciate all those who have supported this exhibition together.

"[IV] Machine Aesthetics / Machine Art (and the route to it)."
The exhibition spreads throughout the OIST's campus except Labs.

[Artificial Intelligence Art and Aesthetics Concert]
As an integral part of exhibition on "Art, Literature, and Music x AI," we will organize four concerts at OIST. The three concerts held in the auditorium will respectively feature music composed by humans for the sake of machine aesthetics, music composed by machines purportedly for the sake of human aesthetics, and music composed for a very rare type of player piano that uses paper rolls. The concert held outside will include participatory workshops and performances.
