主旨 (to English)

Prospectus (to Japanese)

Let me introduce you the launch of "DB of Works By Hideki Nakazawa" on this website. It is a growing database (DB) where I exhibit data on a variety of my lot of works one after another from the author's point of view. There are similarities and dissimilarities to the purport of a catalogue raisonne compiled by an art gallery or a museum after the author's death. I have been dreaming for long years to construct a database of my works, and have begun finally at the opportunity of my leaving hospital; I was operated on for suspected lung cancer a few days ago, and knew I still have the rest of my life, because it came out not being cancer.

I am an artist of fine art. I think the idea is right that an artist's aim is to make art works and that an artist should do nothing other than making art works. If the art works are good, the indispensable words and economics will be under the charge of art critics and a representative gallery.
However, this is right only when the saying "I am an artist" is self-evident. As for me, because I did not receive art education, or because I once professed non-art and debuted as an illustrator instead of an artist, the saying "I am an artist" was not self-evident. Besides, I have many writings and even works of music. The former is questioning the art under the post-war democracy in Japan among the world, while the latter is questioning the identity of each art even to the different genre among many arts. Although both together are inseparable from my art works, people often take such my activities needless, even undermining the saying "I am an artist."
Fortunately, art critics and a representative gallery are taking care of me. I greatly appreciate what they are doing for me on one hand, while on the other hand, I still realize the limitations caused by the above-mentioned situation. The reason is that the past works by a non-self-evident artist or works without a format of fine art, which are difficult to be targetted by critics and a representative gallery, will be ignored and forgotten unless the author takes measures.
Especially, the fact makes the situation worse that I am a person whose generation began their activities in the spreading period of the digital environment, and that I am the artist who considered art and made art works among the mess of the changing the environment. There are a pile of problems which cannot be known even by scholars, such an idea that digital datum itself is a work, or the exsistence of works which can be seen only inside the computers, and even that some of those data cannot be displayed correctly with today's machines. The unlimited ability of being copied which is a merit of digital works will be a demerit for art dealers, besides.
The times of post-modern when the capital ART was disliked was the age of my beginning my activities, which also makes the matters complexed. At that time when artist of fine art never sounded cool, when one refused signning on one's works opposing to what is looked quite like art works, or when attachment to one's own works was supposed to be shameful, there were not a few works which were lost and vanished finally as a result. Incidentally, I am claiming a certain value also on those vanished works.

This database is ... (Sorry, I have not yet completed the translation from the Japanese text...)
