Tokyo Manga

By Hideki Nakazawa

Fall 1997

Hideki Nakazawa is one of the most productive artists of our time. While most computer artists are using the state of the art method and maximum colors in creating the computer arts; Nakazawa, on the other hand, is using minimal computer technology and color in getting his message across. This one of the reasons that make his works was appraised by his fans, the minimalist but very influential work of art.

To see his work of arts please check his website at http://www.aloalo.co.jp/nakazawa/
or

Here is my interview with Hideki Nakazawa:

There are two reasons why I use only few effects:

For the 1st, "Loving Bitmaps" & "Loving Simple Systems". There are two types in CG, you know, painting tools (Bitmaps) and drawing tools (Objective). I love both types but when I paint by Mouse-Handwriting, painting tools are better. And when I use painting tools, I love jaggies what is evidence of Bitmap. For the bitmap painting simple tools such as MacPaint are better than complexed tools such as Photoshop. I am useing Japanese painting tool, Paint at That, that is very very simple, light, handy. I hate heavy tools. By the way I invented 3D-painting tool, Digital Nendo. Nendo means clay, and Digital Nendo is the first Bitmap 3D tool all over the world. All 3D tools have been Objective 3D tools as 3D-drawing tools. If you want to know more about this, please read the text in my homepage as below:

http://shrine.cyber.ad.jp/~nakazawa/NAKAZAWA/nendo/zindex.html

For the 2nd, "Loving Cheap Technology". Indeed my illustration type visual by CG is from 1990. (My fine art type visual is from 1997, the work of SWATCH is as my illustration type visual.) In 1990, my illustration type visual were called "BAKA-CG" in Japan. I was the top batter of BAKA-CG, and BAKA means 'foolish'. Yes in 1990 the CG was considered somewhat like clever or intelligent. But I believed that CG would become very cheap and cool, so I emphasised low technology, not high technology. And I want to say message is more important than technics.

> 2. What is the story that you design a watch for Swatch?

The title is "TOKYO MANGA". But the first title I thought was "TOKYO COLLAGE". I want to say in Tokyo there are many different culture and different people in spite of Japanese is one nation, one race. Eastern culture and electronic technology are mixed there. So my picture is also made of many parts as collage.
